Tips to Transition to a Spring Skincare Routine

Spring, such a beautiful time of year…but with the bloom of tulips come a signal that it is time to transition our skin care products!

With the cold winter months behind us, we need to opt for lighter moisturizers and milder cleansers– to mention just a few ways to bring back that glow.

1. Switch to lightweight moisturizers

During the warmer spring and summer months it’s best to switch to a lighter moisturizer. Thicker moisturizer can leave your skin too oily and increase the chance of breakouts.

2. Incorporate Antioxidant Rich Products

Antioxidants can and should be a part of our year-round skin care routine to prevent pigmentation. Sun induced sunspots are notoriously difficult to erase and so preventing them is key. Topical antioxidants like Vitamin C stabilize free radicals and decrease sun damage

3. Water-based serum

Oil based serums are an absolute godsend during the bitter cold winter months as they provide a much needed protective layer to lock in the moisture.

However, during warmer months ,water-based serums have all the concentrated nutrients & antioxidants your skin needs and they are more lightweight so your skin can absorb them easily.

Dermatologists highly recommend using a Vitamin C serum and a Hyaluronic Acid serum during sunnier weather.

Vitamin C serums are high in antioxidants that help protect your skin from sunburns, sun damage and premature aging. Hyaluronic acid serums help add back moisture lost from increased sweating during warmer weather.

4. Kick Start Spring with Exfoliating

Shed off any flaky dead skin cells from the bitter cold winter and kick start your skin by exfoliating it.

Spring is also a perfect time to see your aesthetician to prep your skin for Spring. A facial package that includes a micro dermabrasion, laser treatment and chemical peel will prepare your skin so it can more effectively absorb your skincare products. Just like spring cleaning our house, we need to do a little spring cleaning on our skin.

5. Step up Sunscreen Application

Sunscreen protects the investment in your facials and skin care products.

Sun exposure is one of the leading causes of premature skin aging. To prevent this you need to make sure you use a separate sunscreen that offers at least an SPF 50.

Most skin care professionals recommend you use a separate sunscreen and not a moisturizer sunscreen combination. The purpose of a moisturizer is to go deep into your skin to add nutrients and hydrate it. The purpose of a sunscreen is to stay on the surface of your skin to repel harmful UV rays.

A good tip is to keep an extra sunscreen in your office or car so you can reapply midday. Your skin still gets UV rays Sitting by an office or car window so reapplying midday is important.

6. Spring Clean your Makeup Drawer

Spring is a great time to look at your expiry dates and toss anything old. Products often have a 24M expiry date which means they are good to use for up to two years if stored properly. Remember overtime bacteria can build up on your makeup and skin care products. If you notice a change in the texture it’s probably best to throw it out.

Sanitize all your makeup tools including your brushes, face rollers and sponges to prevent a buildup of bacteria germs and viruses. Here are tips on how to clean your makeup brushes:

  1. In lukewarm water and a few drops of brush cleaner or a drop of your shampoo.
  2. Gently swish the makeup brushes around until the water looks clear.
  3. Rinse the brushes thoroughly in warm water.
  4. Squeeze out the excess water using a clean towel.
  5. Blow dry the bristle on low and then leave in a cup with the bristles upright for 24 hours to finish air drying.
